The Earth

The end of the month sees the world coming together to make a statement, to try to help save the planet. This is the event called Earth Hour 2014 and Bermuda is preparing to do its part. It is all set for Saturday March 29th, from 8.30pm to 9.30pm.

This is the time of day when Bermuda is being asked to show its support for environmental causes. The people of the island are being asked to switch off their lights and any non essential electrical appliances for one hour. This is a symbolic gesture to bring home the need to conserve energy, in the fight against climate change.

Earth Hour, which has the backing of the World Wildlife Fund for Nature, began in Sydney, Australia in 2007. The project has now grown to become what is considered the biggest mass participation event in the world. Bermuda will commemorate Earth Hour 2014 with a number of activities on the island. There will be numerous events taking place at City Hall and the Washington Mall in Hamilton & Pembroke. These include holding an exciting sponsored fun walk for the whole family.

Earth Hour 2014 will also see local churches, associations and organisations, along with members of the public, being asked to give the project their backing. The population of Bermuda will be among millions around the world celebrating this special day. It is said people from over 150 countries, in more than 7000 towns and cities, will be taking part.

The island of Bermuda can then come together to make a stand against global warming, by marking Earth Hour 2014.
