Bermuda National Trust Museum

Do you wish to more about Bermuda’s history? Then take a trip to King Street in St George’s Town. This is where you will find Bermuda National Trust Museum. Where you come face to face with the island’s past!

The museum was first opened 1961. The building it resides in, however, has been around a lot longer. It has a rich varied history of its own.

The building itself dates back to the 17th century. It was built by the, then governor of Bermuda. Samuel Day. The property was later used as a hotel in the 19th century. Then it was then called The Globe Hotel.

However it was during the American Civil War when the building would achieve its greatest notoriety to some. It would be used as an office by an Agent of the Confederate States of America.

Bermuda has a strong association with the US Civil War of 1861–1865 between North and South, The Southern Confederacy underwent a trade route blockade by the Union. However, various attempts to defeat the blockade were run from ports in the Caribbean. These included St. George harbour in Bermuda. The Bermuda National Trust Museum recalls the role this part of the world played in the war.

But many other aspects of Bermuda’s history are remembered in the museum.

For example, there is an exhibit marking the event which to many people is the most important in the islands history. The museum boasts a model of the ship Sea Venture. This was George Somer’s 17th-century English sailing ship which crashed on the reefs close to St George’s.

This was the incident some say inspired Shakespeare to write his play The Tempest. But you are certain to be inspired by this amazing exhibit, amongst a multitude of others, found at The Bermuda National Trust Museum.
