It is usually the places with innovative and creative cuisine as well as modern and high-tech décor that comes on top for the best dining experience. There are many of these restaurants in Bermuda, especially in the luxurious resorts the island is famous for. But sometimes, all you want is a good old-fashioned dinner in a friendly and cosy place, without fuss and sparks.
That is the reasons why the 2011 Best of Bermuda Award for best hotel restaurant organised by The Bermudian was won by the Waterlot Inn, one of the restaurants of the Fairmont Southampton. Its historic atmosphere rich of 340 years of existence and its hearty food were not a match for any other hotel restaurants, even with their world-class chefs and their top-of-the-range service. The reputation of the Waterlot Inn rests on the quality of the meat it serves, its selection of angus, prime and dry-aged steaks making it the best steakhouse in Bermuda. The location of the restaurant also adds to the great dining experience, with the Jew’s Bay in which it is nested offering stunning views of the ocean, especially the sunsets. There is a sheltered cove where many Bermudians moor their boats while they are having dinner at the Waterlot Inn.
The building itself, a beautiful two-storey manor house dating from 1670, and the inside are giving your dinner a charm you will never have found anywhere else before. Depending on the weather, you can start with a drink at the upstairs bar where you’ll be entertained by a classical pianist, or at the outdoor terrace and in the adjoining gardens.
The magnificent colonial staircase takes you from the bar upstairs to the downstairs three dining rooms. These have beamed ceilings, and a nautical décor made of Windsor’s or Captain’s chairs, oil paintings of clipper ships hung to the wall and exposed wood.
The Waterlot Inn has always been a great feature of the island and had many famous visitors along the years, amongst them Mark Twain, Eleanor Roosevelt, Eugene O’Neil and James Thurber.
Of course, as it is a steakhouse and the best in Bermuda, the first choice at the Waterlot Inn are always the Prime steaks and grilled beef pieces, all served to your taste. But for those who are not so keen on red meat, the restaurant has excellent seafood and fish dishes, such as the catch of the day with local fresh vegetables, or seared scallops in pancetta ham.
Some of the best items, apart from the sumptuous steaks, are the breast of duck roasted with maple syrup, lentils, and foie gras; oysters Rockefeller; Bermuda fish chowder; and seafood ravioli. The menu is quite impressive and inventive without the service suffering of it despite the restaurant being always very busy.
The desserts are as amazing as the rest of the food, with decadent sticky toffee puddings and fine profiteroles in sweet vanilla cream. The Waterlot In is also reputed for its fine wine list and its attractive cigar selection. Dinner is served daily between 6pm to 10pm and brunch is available on Sunday between 11am and 2pm. Dining in the best hotel restaurant in Bermuda has a cost so be ready for an expensive meal that will however be worth every penny.
