This mainstay of the Celebrity Cruises line is famous for its one of a kind restaurant. It features genuine decoration and panelling from the French pre –World War Two ocean liner the SS Normandie. This is the vessel which has been named the greatest liner of the century.
The SS Normandie was launched in 1932 and had its maiden voyage three years later. It weighed almost 80,000-tonnes and was approximately 1,029 ft long. The liner extended across 12 decks and could carry around 1,972 passengers. These included many Hollywood movie stars, from Clark Gable and Jimmy Stewart to Carole Lombard and Maurice Chevalier. It is also said many famous artists of the day, such as Marlene Dietrich and Josephine Baker, performed aboard the SS Normandie.
The ship would sadly eventually catch fire and capsize in 1942. There are moreover remains of this great ship adorning the restaurant of the Celebrity Summit. This is where guests could dine in the shadow of history, while taking a cruise to Bermuda.
