Bermuda Goodwill Golf Tournament December 2011

Bermuda might seem to many a place of leisure and relaxation where the main attractions are the beaches covered of pink sand, the amazing warm turquoise waters and the luxurious resorts. Well, sport plays a big part in the island’s life and at the top spot; golf is pretty much the main activity for locals and tourists alike.

There are 10 golf courses in Bermuda, which makes it the place in the world with the biggest golf courses density. There are of course plenty of tournaments and events related to golf here, such as the Bermuda Goodwill Golf Tournament.

This tournament is entering its 59th edition and will be hosted on the island from Monday, December 5th and Friday, December 9th 2012. It consists of four days of golf competition on four different courses, with a maximum of 120 pro-ams teams. These teams must be comprised of one club professional player and three amateurs. The four-day best-ball stroke tournament will see teams from the United States, Canada, Europe and Bermuda compete for the $15,000 cash prizes.

The Bermuda Goodwill Golf Tournament is the island’s longest lasting golf tournament. It was created as far as 1953 by the Bermuda Golf Association, with the double purpose of promoting the island of Bermuda and bestows goodwill upon all of the participants. With the addition this year of the oldest course of Bermuda – the Riddell’s Bay Golf and Country Club – to the tournament rotation, it will be a celebration of Bermuda’s love affair with golf.

The other three courses which will host this edition of the Bermuda Goodwill Golf Tournament are Port Royal Golf Club, Mid Ocean Club and Belmont Hills Golf Club. This is a great opportunity to play on some of the best Bermuda golf courses, reputed to be some of the best in the world. Plus, it is the chance to get some time on the green during the winter season and to take a break from the driving range.

The tournament will be played by the teams divided in four flights and playing 18 holes each in a different course every day. There are many prizes to be won every day, such as daily team low gross and daily team low net, as well as long drive contests and closest to the pin competitions. The professional players will play for a purse of a value of $25,000 for the men and of $3,500 for the ladies. The men section is made of two divisions, men’s junior division and men’s senior division for the over 50 years old. The ladies division was added in 2010 and the teams competing in it must include three female amateurs while the club professional can either be male or female. This year, the top five players of the junior division as well as the top three in the senior and the ladies division will get payouts from the purses.

For the 2011 edition, the Bermuda Goodwill Golf Tournament will include a rain date, on Wednesday, December 7th. It will be a free day for everyone to enjoy as they wish, with a cocktail party organised by the tournament direction. This cocktail party replaces the traditional lunches of the tournament due to the current economic climate. However, there should be discounts and special offers from various restaurants to accommodate the participants.

The Bermuda Goodwill Golf Tournament is organised since 2001 by Bermuda PGA Professional Alex Madeiros’ company To A Tee Bermuda.
